New York (GNP): United Nations Headquarters in New York has become the centre of global diplomatic activity as world leaders, government representatives, activists, young people and other international voices gather for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The United Nations highlighted the gathering in a social media post showcasing behind-the-scenes images from Headquarters during what it described as the year’s biggest diplomatic week.
The 81st session of the General Assembly opened on September 8, while the high-level General Debate began on September 22.
According to the United Nations, the General Debate is scheduled from September 22 to 26 and again on September 28, with heads of state, heads of government and other high-level representatives addressing the Assembly.
The annual high-level gathering brings representatives of all 193 UN Member States to New York. It provides governments with an opportunity to present their national positions and discuss issues that extend beyond individual borders.
The 2026 General Assembly is taking place under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
The theme was set by the President of the 81st session, Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh.
The United Nations has identified a broad range of issues for this year’s high-level week. These include international peace and security, conflicts, climate change, sustainable development, pandemic preparedness, sea-level rise and efforts to strengthen international cooperation.
UN High-Level Week itself runs from September 18 to 28. The programme includes the General Debate as well as several high-level meetings on major global issues.

A high-level meeting on the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development is scheduled for September 23, while a meeting addressing the existential threats posed by sea-level rise is scheduled for September 24.
A high-level meeting on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response is scheduled for September 25.
The gathering also extends beyond formal speeches inside the General Assembly Hall. Throughout high-level week, governments, international organizations, civil-society representatives, activists, young people and other stakeholders participate in discussions, meetings, side events and public diplomacy activities.
The United Nations has described New York during this period as the centre of global diplomacy, with presidents, prime ministers, ministers and diplomats gathering to address overlapping international challenges.
