Ottawa, 25 November 2022 (GNP/ TDI): The High Commissioner of Pakistan to Canada, Zaheer Janjua met with the Speaker of the Senate of Canada, George Furey in Ottawa.
During the meeting, both officials deliberated upon the wide range of bilateral relations as well as regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest.
In this vein, Zaheer Janjua stated that Pakistan and Canada enjoy a strong multidimensional relationship encompassing various fields and areas of cooperation.
The High Commissioner thanked the Canadian Speaker for his country’s generous support for the flood relief and rehabilitation activities in Pakistan.
Additionally, Janjua highlighted the positive contribution of the large Pakistani diaspora in Canada, forming a strong bridge between the two countries.
For his part, George Furey added that both countries are committed to working together on matters of common interests including climate change, trade, investment, and gender equality.
Canada’s response to Flood in Pakistan
Canadian aid agencies, working together as the ‘Humanitarian Coalition’ along with the government of Canada have helped the flood affectees in Pakistan generously.
In this vein, the government of Canada has provided $3 million to match the donations of the Humanitarian Coalition.
Referring to this, Richard Morgan, Executive Director of the Humanitarian Coalition, says, “The flooding emergency in Pakistan is alarming.
Our member charities are rallying together to help save lives, and we invite Canadians to join us. We are grateful to the federal government for matching the public’s donations.”
Later on, the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau announced more donations for flood victims. In total, Canada has provided $33 million in assistance towards the flood response and longer-term recovery in Pakistan.
Some organizations working for flood victims under Humanitarian Coalition are; Action Against Hunger, Canadian Foodgrains Bank, and Canadian Lutheran World Relief.
Additionally, CARE Canada, Doctors of the World, Islamic Relief Canada, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam-Québec, and Save the Children Canada are also working.
