UN Calls for Equal Pay for Women Worldwide

United Nations (GNP): The United Nations has renewed attention on the global gender pay gap, stating that women are paid about 20 percent less than men on average and calling for equal pay for work of equal value.

The organization emphasized that the gap can become even wider for particular groups of women, including women of color, immigrant women and mothers.

The gender pay gap remains an important issue in discussions surrounding equality in employment and economic participation. Differences in earnings can affect women’s financial security, career progression and long-term economic opportunities.

Through its Equal Pay Day campaign, UN Women is calling for greater attention to the principle that people should receive equal remuneration for work of equal value, regardless of gender.

The issue extends beyond differences in salaries. Women’s participation in the workforce can also be affected by access to employment opportunities, occupational segregation, career progression, unpaid care responsibilities and workplace policies.

These factors can contribute to differences in earnings over the course of a person’s working life. The UN’s message also emphasizes that the gender pay gap does not affect all women in the same way.

Women who experience multiple forms of disadvantage may face wider disparities, making the issue particularly relevant to broader discussions about equality and inclusion.

Equal Pay Day provides an opportunity for governments, employers, workers and civil society organizations to examine existing employment practices and consider measures aimed at reducing unjustified pay differences.

The principle of equal pay for work of equal value is also linked to wider international commitments on gender equality and decent work.

Ensuring fair remuneration can contribute to women’s economic independence and participation in decision-making at household, workplace and societal levels. The United Nations has encouraged continued efforts to address structural barriers that prevent women from receiving equal economic opportunities.

Such efforts can include improving transparency around wages, strengthening workplace protections and supporting policies that enable women to remain and progress in employment.

For women with family responsibilities, access to affordable care services, flexible working arrangements and supportive workplace policies can also influence their ability to participate in the labor market and advance professionally.

The UN’s Equal Pay Day message therefore places the gender pay gap within a broader conversation about fairness and economic equality.

It calls for continued action to ensure that women and men receive equal pay for work of equal value and that barriers affecting women’s participation in the workforce are addressed.

The campaign serves as a reminder that achieving workplace equality requires sustained attention from governments, employers and society.

Equal remuneration remains an important component of creating more inclusive labor markets and expanding economic opportunities for women.
