California (GNP): Spider-Man: Brand New Day has opened to $927m in worldwide ticket sales, making it the second-highest-grossing opening weekend of all time both in the United States and globally. The film marks Tom Holland’s fourth appearance as the character, this time portraying Peter Parker as he fights crime in a world that no longer remembers his secret identity, while his real-life wife, Zendaya, returns as MJ. The story centers on Parker’s isolation and his search for genuine human connection, themes that have shaped much of the film’s reception.
That reception showed up immediately at the box office. The film brought in $355m domestically across the US and Canada, placing it just behind 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which opened at $357m unadjusted for inflation, as the biggest domestic debut in history.
Internationally, it added $572m, with China alone contributing $121m, while Australia recorded its biggest opening weekend of 2026 with $30.4m in ticket sales. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige described the debut as a truly phenomenal opening. The result now gives Marvel Studios the four largest global openings ever recorded without inflation adjustment: Avengers: Endgame at $1.22bn, Spider-Man: Brand New Day at $927m, Avengers: Infinity War at $640m and Spider-Man: No Way Home at $600m.
Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group chairman and chief executive Tom Rothman framed the film’s appeal around its themes rather than its spectacle, describing it as fundamentally a story about friendship and the value of connection that resonates with audiences of all ages worldwide.
That framing lines up with the film’s critical and audience reception, which has held up even as broader interest in superhero films has shown signs of fatigue, with the movie scoring 90 percent from critics and 98 percent from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
Entertainment research firm Enact Insight founder and CEO Greg Durkin told Reuters that the film’s focus on loneliness and overcoming isolation has struck a particular chord with Gen Z audiences, pointing to what he described as a friendship crisis tied to a broader mental health strain among young people, especially young men, in the years following the pandemic. He said the film engages with issues that remain under-addressed and that its themes carry real weight for that audience.

The film’s opening has added further momentum to an already strong summer box office, which had already been lifted by releases including Toy Story 5 and The Odyssey.
Rentrak marketplace trends head Paul Dergarabedian said the pairing of Spider-Man: Brand New Day with The Odyssey produced the biggest domestic weekend in movie theatre history, aided by overlapping cast members Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jon Bernthal appearing in both films, which he said gave Spider-Man an unusually strong lead-in through shared trailer exposure.
Even with the boost, the wider 2026 domestic box office remains below pre-pandemic levels. According to Rentrak, year-to-date receipts are running 10 percent ahead of last year but still 16 percent below 2019 figures.
