Islamabad (GNP): Austrian Ambassador Wolfgang Oliver Kutschera hosted a reception at the Austrian Residence to mark his country’s National Day, observed every year on 26 October.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik was chief guest, and Member of the National Assembly Makhdoom Zain Hussain Qureshi also attended.
Pakistani political and government figures, ambassadors, diplomatic representatives, and senior people from government, business and academic circles were among those present. The venue was decorated with red-white-red Austrian flags, and guests were treated to music and Austrian-style canapés.
The anthems of Austria, Pakistan and the European Union were played as a tribute to shared values of peace, dialogue and cooperation.
Ambassador Kutschera welcomed the guests and reflected on what the National Day means to Austrians. He said that Austria’s commitment to neutrality, democracy and international cooperation has shaped its foreign policy since 1955, and that the same values resonate in Austrian-Pakistani relations, which have matured across diplomacy, culture, education and trade.

Diplomatic ties between the two countries go back more than 70 years, with active cooperation in renewable energy, vocational and higher education, and cultural exchange. Austrian-backed academic partnerships and sustainable-energy initiatives have supported Pakistan’s work in emerging sectors, while Austrian firms have contributed to infrastructure and technical cooperation.
After World War II, Austria was occupied by the four Allied powers (the US, UK, France and the Soviet Union), and Vienna was divided in the same way. The Austrian State Treaty, signed on 15 May 1955, restored the country’s sovereignty, and the last Allied troops left on 25 October 1955.
