NEW DELHI (GNP): India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced his resignation on Saturday, marking the most significant concession yet from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government after weeks of escalating student-led demonstrations over repeated examination paper leaks and testing irregularities across the country.
Pradhan submitted his resignation letter to Modi and confirmed the move in a post on social media platform X, saying he held deep respect for the aspirations and legitimate expectations of India’s youth.
He added that he did not wish to see students entangled in prolonged confrontation while trying to focus on their studies and careers, and expressed gratitude to the prime minister for the opportunity to serve under his leadership.
The announcement came just hours before a scheduled round of talks between government representatives and leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the youth-led protest movement that had made Pradhan’s removal its central and non-negotiable demand.
News of the resignation triggered scenes of celebration at Jantar Mantar in central Delhi, where thousands of demonstrators have camped for days, chanting and waving flags as organizers took to a makeshift stage to address the crowd.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke told supporters gathered at the protest site that the movement had achieved what it set out to do, thanking students and activists who had sustained weeks of pressure on the government.
The party also issued a statement online declaring that the outcome represented a win for democracy, framing the resignation as vindication of a campaign that began as political satire before evolving into one of the most consequential youth movements India has seen in years.
The unrest traces back to widespread anger after national examinations, including a medical entrance test, were compromised by leaked papers, forcing millions of students to retake exams and deepening long-standing frustration over accountability in India’s education system.
That frustration intensified after a senior judicial figure referred to some unemployed young people using the term “cockroaches,” a remark he later said was aimed specifically at holders of fraudulent degrees. Rather than fading, the comment was reclaimed by students as a symbol of resilience, giving rise to the Cockroach Janta Party and fueling a movement that tapped into deeper concerns about joblessness, corruption and limited opportunity among India’s youth, who make up roughly forty percent of the population.
Momentum built further after authorities used force against demonstrators attempting to march toward parliament, an episode that drew public criticism and widened the movement’s reach beyond Delhi to cities including Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. The movement also drew national attention when activist Sonam Wangchuk was hospitalized after weeks on hunger strike in solidarity with the students, ending his fast shortly before Pradhan’s resignation was announced.

Despite the outcome, CJP leadership indicated the campaign was not concluding. Dipke said the group would continue pressing for compensation for the families of students who died by suicide following the exam leak controversy, along with accountability for law enforcement personnel accused of using excessive force during the crackdown on protesters. He also renewed calls for guarantees that demonstrators would not face criminal prosecution over their participation in the protests.
Analysts note that the episode represents one of the most visible challenges to Modi’s government in recent years, and that the movement’s broader agenda, including proposed judicial reforms and expanded political representation for women, could shape its next phase of activity even after securing its central demand.
