China Unveils AI Systems to Transform Mineral Exploration

Beijing (GNP): China has unveiled two artificial intelligence-powered systems designed to improve geological mapping and mineral exploration, marking a new development in the use of AI for geoscience and natural-resource assessment.

The AI-GeoMapping and AI-OreSeeking systems were officially presented by China’s Ministry of Natural Resources on September 11 at the 2026 China International Mining Conference in Tianjin.

The AI-GeoMapping system is designed to cover the geological mapping process from preliminary research and data collection to map generation and compilation.

According to the China Geological Survey, the system can automatically establish geological frameworks, identify geological boundaries, analyze geological relationships and identify hidden geological bodies.

It can also generate different types of professional geological maps and reports while supporting the integration and updating of data through cloud-based systems.

The system has reportedly achieved an overall geological-body identification accuracy of more than 90 percent.

The China Geological Survey also says that data processing, integrated analysis and geological map compilation can become more than 50 percent more efficient compared with traditional approaches.

AI-GeoMapping has already been tested across nearly 100 map sheets at a 1:50,000 scale in areas including Qinghai, Xizang, Xinjiang and Fujian. Its reported international applications include Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Laos, Peru, Rwanda and Tanzania.

The technology could also reduce the amount of fieldwork required in difficult environments.

The China Geological Survey says the system is particularly suitable for high-altitude mountains, forests, wetlands, deserts and other areas where conventional geological surveying can involve significant logistical and safety challenges.

AI-OreSeeking Focuses on Mineral Exploration

The second system, AI-OreSeeking, is focused specifically on mineral exploration and resource prediction.

The system combines geoscience data, geological knowledge, exploration models and more than 200 data-processing and analysis algorithms.

It also draws on millions of entries in geological knowledge graphs covering geological environments, mineralization patterns and deposit models.

AI-OreSeeking is designed to process information from multiple sources, including geological, geophysical, geochemical and remote-sensing datasets.

It can assist with identifying prospective areas, generating three-dimensional geological models, conducting resource prediction assessments and producing professional maps and reports.

West Qinling Test Shows Time Reduction

One reported test illustrates the potential impact of the technology. At a gold exploration project in the western Qinling region, the system reduced a multi-source data-processing and prediction-evaluation process from more than 30 days to five days.

Chinese sources report that the system identified two gold exploration targets and four additional prospective areas during the tech.

The system has reportedly been trialed in more than 100 mineral exploration projects across more than 10 provincial-level regions in China, including Xizang, Xinjiang, Fujian, Shandong and Inner Mongolia.

It can be applied to exploration and assessment involving minerals such as gold, iron, copper, aluminium, lithium, cobalt, nickel, lead, zinc, chromium, potash and uranium.

A New Role for AI in Geoscience

The launch demonstrates how artificial intelligence is increasingly being integrated into fields traditionally dependent on specialist knowledge, field observation and large-scale data analysis.

For geological agencies and mining industries, faster processing of complex datasets could help researchers identify areas for further investigation and reduce the time required for preliminary assessment.

However, AI-generated geological predictions still need to be evaluated alongside field evidence, geological expertise and appropriate verification.

China’s unveiling of AI-GeoMapping and AI-OreSeeking therefore represents not only a technological development in mineral exploration but also an example of how AI is being applied to large-scale scientific and natural-resource challenges.

As the systems continue to be tested and potentially adopted internationally, their performance and practical applications will remain an important area to watch in the future of geological surveying.
