It was first observed in 1933 by Moroccan nationalists in support of Sultan Mohammed Ben Youssef, later King Mohammed V, as a symbol of national unity and loyalty during the French and Spanish protectorates. The celebration became an official national event a year later through a ministerial decree. The date of Throne Day has changed with successive monarchs. During the reign of King Mohammed V, it was celebrated on November 18, while King Hassan II observed it on March 3 after ascending the throne in 1961. Since King Mohammed VI became Morocco's 23rd Alaouite monarch on July 30, 1999, Throne Day has been celebrated annually on July 30. Morocco Marks 27 Years of King Mohammed VI’s Reign on Throne Day
