Paris (GNP): UNESCO has brought together around 700 students at its Campus XL event to discuss how education should evolve in the age of artificial intelligence (AI).
The event focused on the growing role of AI in education and the importance of ensuring that technology supports, rather than replaces, students’ curiosity, effort and critical-thinking abilities.
During the gathering, young learners explored questions surrounding the use of AI and algorithms in education.
Discussions also examined the importance of questioning information generated or presented by digital technologies and maintaining critical thinking in an increasingly technology-driven learning environment.
UNESCO emphasized that while artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important educational tool, technology should remain a means of supporting learning rather than replacing the intellectual effort required from students.
The discussions also highlighted the continuing importance of deep learning. As AI tools become capable of producing answers and completing increasingly complex tasks, students need skills that enable them to assess information, ask meaningful questions and understand the reasoning behind answers.

The event provided young learners with an opportunity to consider both the opportunities and challenges associated with AI in education.
Participants discussed how emerging technologies can be incorporated into learning while preserving the human elements of education.
UNESCO also reiterated the principle that education remains a fundamental right, regardless of technological developments.
The Campus XL initiative, organized with the support of Huawei Tech4All and in collaboration with 6C Conseil, brought students and education stakeholders together for discussions about the future of learning.
The event underlined the importance of preparing young people not only to use new technologies but also to understand their limitations and implications.
As artificial intelligence continues to transform classrooms and educational practices, UNESCO’s engagement with students reflects the growing need for young people to become informed and critical users of technology.
