New York, (GNP): The United Nations has renewed its call for stronger global action to improve maternal health, highlighting that more than 700 women die every day from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth.
In a recent awareness campaign, the UN emphasized that safe motherhood is a fundamental right rather than a privilege. The organization stressed that many maternal deaths can be prevented through timely access to quality healthcare services, skilled birth attendants, and adequate medical support before, during, and after childbirth.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has urged governments worldwide to increase investments in maternal healthcare systems and strengthen policies that protect the health and well-being of women throughout pregnancy and childbirth.
According to the campaign, a woman dies approximately every two minutes due to complications associated with pregnancy and childbirth. These deaths disproportionately affect women in low and middle income countries, where access to essential healthcare services remains limited.
The UN noted that improving maternal health outcomes requires coordinated efforts involving governments, healthcare providers, international organizations, and local communities. Increased funding for healthcare infrastructure, trained medical personnel, emergency obstetric care, and reproductive health services can significantly reduce maternal mortality rates.
