WASHINGTON, D.C. (GNP): United States President Donald Trump abruptly ended a nationally televised interview with NBC News on Sunday after anchor Kristen Welker pressed him to provide evidence for his repeated and unsubstantiated allegations that California’s ongoing ballot counting process was fraudulent.
The interview, which aired on NBC’s “Meet the Press” and was recorded in Wisconsin, became confrontational when Welker challenged Trump’s assertions that California election officials were “cheating” because vote tallying in the state’s gubernatorial and Los Angeles mayoral races had not concluded four days after polls closed.
When asked directly whether he had any evidence to support his fraud allegations, Trump responded that simply observing the situation was sufficient. Welker countered that extended ballot counting is standard procedure under California election law, a point acknowledged by state and local officials themselves.
The exchange escalated sharply, with Trump directing personal insults at Welker, calling her and her network “crooked” and “stupid,” and declaring that American elections were being rigged with the full knowledge of major media organizations. Shortly after, Trump removed his microphone, dropped it to the floor, and walked off set, stating he had “had enough.”
At the time of the interview, California’s gubernatorial race showed veteran Democratic politician Xavier Becerra leading Republican Steve Hilton by approximately one percentage point, with over 70 percent of votes counted. The Los Angeles mayoral contest remained equally tight, with City Councilmember Nithya Raman narrowly ahead of former television personality Spencer Pratt.
Analysts and election officials have traced the origins of the fraud narrative to a misreading of voting data from Los Angeles on election night, during which one candidate appeared to receive zero votes in a single update, a figure later confirmed to be erroneous. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli publicly stated on the social media platform X that the claim was false, clarifying that every candidate received votes in each update cycle.

Essayli separately confirmed that his office, in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Los Angeles field office, has multiple election-related investigations currently underway. He urged potential witnesses to come forward while explicitly cautioning against submitting rumors, theories, or unverified secondhand accounts.
Trump’s decision to walk out of a major network interview marks a significant moment in the ongoing national debate over election integrity, media credibility, and the boundaries of political discourse in the United States.
