Russia’s lunar mission ends in unexpected descent

Russia’s ambitious lunar mission faced a setback as the Luna-25 spacecraft lost control and crashed onto the Moon’s surface.

Moscow, 21 August 2023, (GNP): Russia’s lunar mission ended in failure as the Luna-25 spacecraft lost control and crashed onto the moon. The state-run news agency reported that the unmanned lunar probe encountered an ‘emergency’ prior to landing.

The soft landing of this lunar probe was scheduled on Monday. On Sunday, it was supposed to approach the surface of the moon to prepare for landing. However, an accident occurred during the preparation phase. It was anticipated that it would set a historical milestone by landing on the moon prior to Chandrayaan 3.

Roscosmos previously acknowledged that the Luna 25 mission is not a piece of cake and could potentially fail. Luna 25 was about the size of a small car. It was supposed to work at the South Pole of the Moon for a year. The Russian space mission was intended to collect samples of the moon’s soil for examination.

Following the incident, Roscosmos announced the formation of a commission to investigate the cause of incident. Vitaly Egorov, a renowned Russian space analyst, pointed out that the mission had achieved certain successes despite the unfortunate crash. “Luna 25 displayed significant progress as it headed towards the Moon, executed orbital corrections, and successfully tested onboard electronics and scientific instruments,” he commented.

He further added that it managed to collect some limited scientific data during the flight and transmitted images of the Moon. This level of accomplishment had not been reached before in Russian cosmonautics.

A spokesman for the Indian space agency ISRO expressed regret over the failure of Luna 25. He stated,“Every space mission is perilous and technically complex. It is unfortunate that Luna 25 had an accident”.
