Rabat, 27 April 2024 (GNP): During the arrival of Moroccan Ambassador to Sweden Karim Medrek, the Moroccan flag was raised at the entrance to Malmö’s old city hall as a symbolic act of rekindled friendship.
The ambassador’s visit heralds a new age of cooperation and respect between Sweden and Morocco and represents a good shift in those relations.
Following Morocco’s recall of its ambassador to Sweden, there was a period of diplomatic strain leading up to Ambassador Medrek’s visit to Malmö. This was in reaction to a contentious demonstration in Sweden where a Quranic copy was set ablaze in a public area, causing Morocco and other nations with a majority of Muslims to express concern.
Swedish officials have since stated that they are dedicated to preserving and strengthening their relationship with Morocco.
With more than 60 attendees, the Moroccan Association of Malmö organized the event, which was a major step in the right direction for the resumption of diplomatic relations.
Highlighting “fruitful meetings with local authorities, economic actors, and academic institutions” to deepen the connection between Morocco and Sweden, Ambassador Medrek published his thoughts on the visit on his official X account.

Ambassador Medrek’s interactions with the Moroccan community in Malmö and its environs during his tour demonstrated King Mohammed VI’s steadfast support for the Moroccan diaspora.
He praised the Moroccan talent in Sweden for their hard work and accomplishments, which have helped Morocco become more well-known throughout the world.
Additionally, Ambassador Medrek talked on Morocco’s robust economic expansion, attributing it to the significant structural changes carried out during the previous 20 years.
Morocco’s economy is now among the strongest in Africa and the Arab world thanks to these reforms, which also present a number of promising avenues for Swedish cooperation.
Additionally, the visit offered a forum for talks on important subjects such academic exchanges, smart city development, and renewable energy with Swedish colleagues.
The ambassador’s contacts with academic institutions and business executives cleared the path for future collaboration and trade between the two nations.
