New Delhi (GNP): India is confronting a growing online gambling crisis as rising debts and financial losses linked to digital betting platforms push authorities toward stronger regulation of the country’s rapidly expanding online gaming market.

The issue drew national attention following cases reported in Telangana, where families were left struggling with heavy debts tied to online betting. Police said one 22-year-old man from Nizamabad had spent around 1.8 million rupees on betting and borrowed money from several people before he and his parents died by suicide in October 2024, after the family sold land in an attempt to repay the debt.

India’s online gaming sector has expanded significantly in recent years, drawing hundreds of millions of users nationwide. However, authorities say the growth of illegal, money-based betting platforms has become a particular concern, distinct from the broader digital gaming industry.

Experts say online gambling often begins with small wagers but can develop into a cycle of repeated losses, borrowing and mounting financial pressure. Authorities have linked several similar incidents to online betting losses, though experts caution that cases involving suicide are typically complex and shaped by multiple contributing factors rather than a single cause.

In response to these concerns, India introduced the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, aimed at closing regulatory gaps and restricting illegal betting activity nationwide. The law prohibits online money games involving chance, skill, or a combination of both, and places new restrictions on advertising and financial transactions connected to such platforms.

Enforcement of the new law remains difficult, however, since many betting platforms operate from outside India or frequently shift between domains and digital channels to avoid detection and restriction.

Authorities have also raised concerns about the role of offshore betting advertisements, influencer promotions and social media in attracting new users to these platforms. The Advertising Standards Council of India reported identifying thousands of offshore betting advertisements, along with a number of influencers involved in promoting such platforms to their followers.

Experts note that the accessibility of smartphone technology has made online betting easier to access than ever, allowing users to place wagers instantly. As India moves forward with its regulatory efforts, policymakers continue to face the challenge of balancing growth in the digital gaming sector with stronger protections for users and families affected by gambling-related debt and addiction.
