PSL Sixes Could Bring League Cricket to Smaller Cities

PSL Sixes Could Bring League Cricket to Smaller Cities

Lahore (GNP): The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is considering a six-a-side cricket tournament in its off-season, as part of plans to widen the league’s reach and keep fans engaged throughout the year. The proposal has not been finalised.

PSL chief executive Salman Naseer said the competition, tentatively called PSL Sixes, could follow a format similar to the Hong Kong Sixes. He spoke on a PSL podcast released ahead of the league’s governing council meeting.

Naseer said discussions are still at an exploratory stage and no final decision has been taken. The idea is one of several plans under review for the league.

Its main attraction is the chance to take cricket beyond the usual venues. Naseer said the tournament could be played in smaller cities and stadiums that have never hosted PSL matches.

The league has expanded across Pakistan since its establishment in 2016, with Lahore, Karachi, Multan and Rawalpindi among its established venues. A sixes event would extend that presence further.

A shorter format with fewer players could also be easier to organise. It would offer franchises and sponsors additional commercial opportunities, and Naseer said it could become a recurring event if the proposal proves feasible.

One challenge remains, which is finding a suitable window for overseas players. Their international and franchise cricket commitments make scheduling difficult.

Meanwhile, preparations continue for the 2027 PSL season, which is expected to overlap with the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the third consecutive year. The governing council is expected to finalise the tournament schedule and the arrangements for the player auction.

Further details of the proposed six-a-side competition have yet to be announced. Salman Naseer said, “Nothing is finalised, but there are some exciting plans.”
