Islamabad (GNP): Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has chosen couturier Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, popularly known as HSY, to design new uniforms for its cabin crew, the national flag carrier announced on Thursday.
The collection will make its official debut on October 31 aboard PIA’s inaugural Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner flight from London to Islamabad. The airline sees the launch as another step in refreshing its onboard identity under its consortium-led new management.
According to a statement from PIA, the collection aims to blend Pakistan’s cultural heritage with contemporary fashion. It also reflects the airline’s emphasis on hospitality, passenger comfort and crew confidence. PIA spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez Khan called it a stylish leap forward in the airline’s ongoing transformation.
The designs put comfort and function first, with long-haul operations and the physical movement required of cabin crew in mind. They use breathable fabrics, ergonomic construction and structured tailoring to balance durability with a refined appearance. The colour palette and detailing draw on Pakistan’s cultural craftsmanship while keeping the practical features that airline uniforms need.
The final design was picked through a competitive showcase in Karachi. Ten leading Pakistani designers presented their concepts to a jury of fashion figures and industry representatives.
HSY is one of the country’s best-known fashion designers. He has built an international profile through couture, celebrity styling and appearances on global fashion platforms.

His appointment continues a tradition that links PIA with internationally recognised names. The airline recalled that French designer Pierre Cardin created its pioneering A-line tunic and hood in 1966. In the 1970s, Sir Hardy Amies, royal couturier to Queen Elizabeth II, brought his tailoring expertise to its uniforms. More recently, designer Nomi Ansari’s uniform inspiration remained part of PIA’s identity for 12 years.
PIA said the launch will introduce its refreshed visual identity to passengers. It describes the move as the start of a new chapter built on comfort, sophistication and national pride.
HSY said, “Designing for our national flag carrier is about capturing our collective pride.”
