Messi Lifts Inter Miami Into Playoffs With 2-0 Win Over NYCFC

Miami (GNP): Inter Miami did not need a goal from Lionel Messi to secure its place in the postseason. His presence alone proved decisive on a night when qualification was the only objective.

On Wednesday night at Chase Stadium, Inter Miami defeated New York City FC (NYCFC) 2-0 to clinch qualification for the Major League Soccer (MLS) playoffs for a third consecutive season. The result was defined by control, composure and the kind of experience that has become the identity of this team since 2023.

The week has been demanding for Messi, following an emotional farewell tribute in Argentina and a two-goal performance that carried Miami to a comeback victory on Saturday. Despite the physical and emotional load, he appeared sharp, composed and influential throughout, dictating tempo and creating space that others could exploit.

The opening goal arrived in the 20th minute and encapsulated the understanding that is developing within this squad. Messi received the ball just outside the penalty area, took a controlled touch under pressure, drew two defenders toward him and then released Rodrigo De Paul with perfect timing.

De Paul delivered a measured chip to the byline, where Luis Suarez had made an intelligent run. Instead of taking the shot himself, as he might have done earlier in his career, Suarez squared the ball cleanly across the face of goal for German Berterame to finish from close range. It was Berterame’s first goal since May, ending a prolonged and frustrating drought, and the relief on his face was evident.

Shortly before halftime, Miami doubled the lead through a move that started with Berterame driving forward from midfield and finding Messi on the right flank. The pass was not ideal but was made workable by Messi’s awareness. Surrounded by three New York City FC defenders, Messi chose not to shoot and instead played a precise pass with the outside of his left foot to De Paul, who finished high past goalkeeper Matt Freese. It made the score 2-0 and effectively decided the contest before the interval.

For head coach Cristian Kily Gonzalez, the victory carried significance beyond the three points. It marked his first consecutive wins since taking charge last month and ensures that second-placed Miami will feature in at least the wild-card round with five regular-season matches still remaining. His short and honest assessment after the match reflected a team that is beginning to find cohesion.

Inter Miami continued to create opportunities after the break. Messi saw a curled effort from the edge of the area go narrowly over the crossbar. In the 90th minute, he combined with De Paul from a quick short corner that led to a powerful strike, which Freese tipped onto the post in what was arguably New York City FC’s best defensive moment of the night.

New York City, by contrast, continue to struggle for form and confidence, having managed just one win in their last eleven MLS matches. They were awarded a late penalty in stoppage time after Ian Fray fouled Talles Magno, but it offered little consolation in a match they rarely controlled.

For Inter Miami, playoff qualification has shifted from ambition to expectation since Messi’s arrival in 2023. With Messi, Suarez, De Paul and Berterame now showing increasing cohesion under Gonzalez, Miami will enter the postseason not simply to participate but as a serious contender. Messi did not score on the night, but he did not need to.

The broader context of this result extends well beyond the ninety minutes at Chase Stadium. For Inter Miami, this qualification represents continuity and stability that the club lacked in its early seasons in MLS.

Before the summer of 2023, reaching the playoffs was considered a major achievement, something that required near-perfect form in the final weeks. The arrival of Messi, followed by Suarez and now the integration of De Paul, has changed the internal expectations completely. Three consecutive appearances is now the minimum standard.

The manner in which this qualification was achieved, through control rather than chaos, will be particularly pleasing for Gonzalez, who has been tasked with bringing more tactical discipline to a side that has often relied on individual brilliance to resolve matches.

The connection between De Paul and Messi was perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the evening for Miami supporters. Their relationship off the pitch is well documented from the Argentine national team, but their understanding on the pitch for Miami is still developing. Against NYCFC, that understanding looked natural, with De Paul making third-man runs that Messi is uniquely able to find and Messi trusting De Paul to execute in the final third.

With De Paul contributing a goal and an assist and covering significant ground in midfield, Miami had a balance that has been missing at times this season. Add Suarez’s willingness to create rather than just finish and Berterame’s renewed confidence after ending his goal drought, and Gonzalez suddenly has multiple attacking options who can interchange positions without losing structure.

For New York City FC, the evening confirmed a difficult trend that has defined their recent form. They struggled to create clear chances against a Miami side that pressed intelligently and recovered the ball quickly after losing it. One win in eleven league games places considerable pressure on the coaching staff and the squad, and while Freese produced a couple of important saves to keep the scoreline respectable, the lack of cutting edge in the final third was evident throughout.

The late penalty incident involving Magno and Fray came too late to change the momentum. Even then, it felt more like a consolation opportunity than a genuine chance to return to the match, which speaks to how comfortably Miami managed the second half.

Looking ahead, the timing of this qualification could prove crucial for Inter Miami’s ambitions for the rest of the season. With five regular-season games still to play, Gonzalez now has the freedom to manage minutes, rotate his squad and ensure that key players arrive at the wild-card round or the first round proper in optimal condition.

The team is currently second in the Eastern Conference. The Supporters’ Shield may be out of reach, but securing a higher seed and potentially a home playoff game will be the immediate priority.

For Messi himself, the fact that he could dominate a playoff-clinching match without scoring will be seen internally as a positive sign. It shows that this team no longer depends solely on his goals but benefits from his ability to elevate everyone around him, and that may be the most important development as Miami prepares for the pressure of the postseason.

Cristian Kily Gonzalez said, “I’m leaving happy. Obviously, there’s a lot to improve, but we’re making progress little by little.”
