Aung San Suu Kyi imprisoned for 33 years

The Noble Laureate and democratic leader of Myanmar was sentenced for 33 years jail on the baseless charges upon her by the military junta who overthrew her democratic government in February 2021.

Naypyidaw, 30 December 2022 (GNP): The ousted democratic of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, was sentenced by the military court to another period of seven years. The Nobel Laureate democratic would now have to spend more than three decades in prison.

The 77-year-old leader has been convicted for almost anything that the military junta had leveled against her. Right from corruption to illegally possessing a walkie-talkie to flout COVID restrictions, anything that is brought against the old female democratic leader of Myanmar, she is sentenced for them. The Myanmar army overthrew the democratic government of Aung San Suu Kyi on First February 2021.

A number of cases have been filed against her since the last coup d’état, in which she was collectively awarded 33 years imprisonment. Human watchdogs and the legal fraternity called Suu Kyi’s trials a sham in which no due process was adopted nor internationally accepted norms were followed.

An official on the condition of anonymity said that all cases against Aung San Suu Kyi had been finally closed. Though, they were granted an appeal right against this verdict.

However, none of the military junta officials or their spokesperson commented on the trials and their verdict. Journalists and media were forbidden by the authorities to attend or report the trial proceedings. Even the legal team of Suu Kyi was stopped from talking to the media after the court verdict.

Former President of Myanmar, Win Myint, was also booked and sentenced for these charges in which Aung San Suu Kyi was imprisoned.

Being an ardent worker of democracy, Suu Kyi is known for peace and non-violence in her struggle in Myanmar. Unfortunately, after the coup and Suu Kyi’s arrest and trials, many have turned to violence for this democratic cause.

The People’s Defense Forces attack military personnel across the country and as a result, security forces regularly crack down on its activists and fighters.

The UN Security Council stressed that the Myanmar military junta to free up Aung San Suu Kyi and other democratic leaders of Myanmar. China and Russia abstained from voting against Myanmar, which is its staunch supporter.

The international community also condemned the trials and verdict against Aung San Kyi and others and called it baseless and shameful.
