United States announces $320,000 grant for Mehrgarh museum in Balochistan

Quetta, 24 January, 2024 (GNP): On Tuesday, US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome committed a grant exceeding $320,000 to Balochistan’s Mehrgarh Museum through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation.

This funding aims to improve the museum facilities and safeguard cultural artifacts for future preservation.

Located in Quetta, the museum was officially opened in September 2022 by the former Balochistan chief minister, Mir Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo.

During a ceremony, Blome expressed, “Today, the United States is pleased to declare a grant of $320,470 under the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation. This funding will enrich the Mehrgarh Museum in Quetta and ensure the preservation of cultural artifacts for future generations.”

Collaborating with Balochistan’s Culture Department and the Sindh Exploration and Adventure Society, we are creating history with the inaugural Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation project dedicated to Balochistan.

He emphasized that the museum represents more than just a compilation of artifacts; it serves as a vibrant link to our collective history as human beings.

He added that the museum signifies the rich history of Balochistan and narrates the common tale of Pakistan and South Asia.

“The Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation grant will contribute to safeguarding Neolithic and other archaeological artifacts from the Mehrgarh civilization, and also enhance the museum’s exhibits, ensuring the protection and sharing of this remarkable heritage with future generations.”

Addressing the gathering, the ambassador highlighted that the fund extends beyond artifact preservation, emphasizing its capacity to empower individuals.

He emphasized that this investment not only safeguards Pakistan’s heritage but also generates employment opportunities and bolsters local economies.

He further explained, ”Through this grant, we have forged a partnership with the Balochistan Directorate of Archaeology, and the funding will facilitate staff training to guarantee the sustained vitality of the museum long after the completion of this project.”
