New York (GNP): UNICEF has reiterated its call for the protection of children in the West Bank, stressing that children affected by violence have the same fundamental rights as children everywhere, including the right to live, learn and grow in safety.
The statement was highlighted following remarks by UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Hannan Sulieman at a United Nations Security Council meeting addressing escalating violence in the West Bank.
UNICEF emphasized that children should be able to live without violence and fear and have access to education, protection and opportunities to build their futures.
The organization said it would continue advocating for children and providing humanitarian assistance and protection to children it can reach.
The statement comes amid continuing concerns over the impact of violence on children and families in the West Bank.
For children living in areas affected by conflict and insecurity, violence can disrupt education, restrict access to essential services and create lasting physical and psychological consequences.
Children are particularly vulnerable during periods of conflict and instability.
Their needs extend beyond immediate humanitarian assistance and include safety, healthcare, education, family protection and access to essential services.
UNICEF’s position also draws attention to the distinction between humanitarian assistance and the political conditions required to create lasting safety.
Humanitarian organizations can provide emergency assistance, protection and other essential services, but they cannot independently establish the political environment necessary to end violence.
During the Security Council discussion, Sulieman stressed that responsibility for changing those conditions rests with Member States that have the authority to influence political and security circumstances.
The issue of child protection remains central to the international humanitarian response.
International humanitarian law and international human rights standards provide important protections for children during armed conflict and situations of violence.

The protection of civilians, including children, remains a fundamental concern for the international community.Violence can affect children’s lives in numerous ways.
Beyond the immediate danger of injury or death, children may experience displacement, separation from family members, interruption of schooling, loss of access to healthcare and other essential services, and prolonged psychological distress.
Education is particularly vulnerable during periods of insecurity. When violence disrupts schools or makes travel unsafe, children can lose access to learning and social support.
Prolonged interruptions to education can also have consequences for children’s development and future opportunities.
UNICEF’s continued humanitarian work seeks to reach children affected by these circumstances with assistance and protection.
The organization has emphasized that humanitarian operations alone cannot resolve the underlying political and security challenges that continue to expose children to danger.
The situation also highlights the importance of ensuring humanitarian actors can safely reach affected communities.
Humanitarian assistance is most effective when organizations have the necessary access, security and resources to provide support to children and families in need.
The protection of children must remain a priority regardless of political circumstances. Children do not choose the conflicts into which they are born, yet they can bear some of their most serious consequences.
UNICEF’s appeal therefore places the rights and safety of children at the center of international discussions concerning the West Bank.
The organization continues to advocate for children’s protection while providing humanitarian assistance wherever access and operational conditions allow.
The broader challenge remains creating conditions in which children can live without fear, attend school, receive healthcare and develop normally.
Achieving that objective ultimately requires sustained political efforts alongside humanitarian action.
As violence continues to affect communities, international attention remains focused on preventing further harm to children and ensuring that their rights are respected.
