Typhoon Doksuri strikes China’s Fujian province after thousands evacuated

The second-strongest typhoon to hit Fujian after the deadly Typhoon Meranti in 2016.

Hong Kong, 28 July 2023 (GNP):  Typhoon Doksuri made landfall in China’s Fujian Province, bringing destructive winds and heavy rainfall. More than 724,600 people were affected, while local authorities had already evacuated more than 400,000 residents from vulnerable areas to ensure their safety during the storm as a precautionary measure.

The second-strongest typhoon to hit Fujian after the deadly Typhoon Meranti in 2016 also resulted in the closure of schools and the evacuation of employees from offshore oil and gas fields, according to state media. There were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities.

The powerful Typhoon Doksuri’s speed was clocked at 85.1mph (137kmh) as of 1 pm local time, according to China’s National Meteorological Center. Hourly rainfall in Xiamen, Quanzhou, and Putian exceeded 50mm, the China Meteorological Administration said.

In response to the threat posed by Typhoon Doksuri, local governments, and emergency services promptly initiated evacuation plans to protect communities in the storm’s trajectory. The coordinated efforts aimed to minimize the impact of the typhoon on human lives and reduce potential damage to property and infrastructure.

In addition to the large-scale evacuations, authorities also activated disaster response teams and relief measures to address any emergencies arising from the storm’s impact. Rescue personnel and resources have been pre-positioned to ensure swift response and aid in case of any adverse situations.

Moreover, the typhoon is expected to travel north and bring heavy rain to ten provinces, according to forecasters. It will pass through the agricultural province of Anhui, dumping rain on its growing maize, rice, soya bean, and cotton crops. Analysts expect it to lessen by then, but they are keenly monitoring for any potential crop damage.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow guidance from local authorities as the situation continues to unfold. Any updates or further instructions will be communicated through official channels to ensure accurate information dissemination.
