Washington D.C., 24 October 2021 (GNP/ TDI): US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke with Cabo Verde’s Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, on 23 October to congratulate him on the country’s independent democratic institutions. Blinken commended the Cabo Verdean government for upholding free and fair presidential elections on October 17.
During the telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Correia e Silva, Secretary Blinken also appreciated Cabo Verde’s robust response to the Covid-19 pandemic and reiterated the United States’ continued commitment to providing Praia with effective Covid-19 vaccines via Washington’s global partners.
Blinken emphasized the Biden administration’s top priorities in Cabo Verde. These include making collective efforts for the rigorous implementation of human rights, improvement of security conditions, tackling Covid-19, and enhancing economic growth and development in the country.
Earlier on Sunday, President-elect José Maria Neves won Cabo Verde’s presidential election. The US State Department congratulated the voters, candidates, and election workers of the country for conducting an independent and fair electoral process as a part of their democratic probity.
Cabo Verde serves as one of the most important partners of the United States in Africa. Washington formally established diplomatic ties with the country in 1975, following its independence from Portugal. Being a model of democratic governance, Cabo Verde enjoys a relatively higher per capita income, positive health indicators, and an ample literacy rate in the region.
