Astana (GNP): The Battle Royale PUBG: Battlegrounds competition, presented by Alatau City Bank, opened its three-day run at the Games of the Future 2026 powered by SAMRUK-KAZYNA, with sixteen teams taking to Beeline Arena in Astana for a first day of tactical rotations, sudden eliminations and a leaderboard that shifted with almost every match.
The opening game set the tone for the unpredictability that would define the day, as teams spent the early stages cautiously scouting the map before full engagements broke out and several fan favourites were eliminated earlier than expected.
Anyone’s Legend made the most of the resulting chaos, fighting through to the tournament’s first Chicken Dinner along with seven eliminations, which placed them atop the early standings, while 17 Gaming and Twisted Minds, despite exiting the match early, picked up enough elimination points through strong combat to stay within reach of the leaders.
A technical delay pushed back the second match, but the break appeared to work in Team Vitality’s favour. JD Gaming, who had finished at the bottom of the first match, fought back to third place, while Team Vitality took a patient early approach before closing hard, eliminating both JD Gaming and Full Sense to finish with six kills and top spot for the match.
Twisted Minds placed fourth, and GeeKay Esports, despite finishing seventh in this match, remained the overall leaderboard leader on the strength of consistent kill totals across the first two games. Team Vitality player Andrey Pobedinskiy said the win came after a difficult opening match, and that the team’s focus is on eliminating its own mistakes when it plays its natural game, adding that the squad arrived in Astana determined to improve on a fifth-place finish at the Esports World Cup.
Momentum shifted again in the third match. GeeKay Esports and Twisted Minds, who had co-led the standings, were both eliminated early and without significant kills, dropping down the leaderboard and opening space for other squads to move up. Made in Thailand took advantage with their strongest showing of the day to finish second, while 17 Gaming timed a late push to perfection, winning the match and climbing to the top of the overall standings with a ten-point lead over Anyone’s Legend in second.
That lead proved short-lived. In the fourth match, 17 Gaming were knocked out early alongside Twisted Minds, leaving Team Vitality, JD Gaming, GAM The Expendables and Made in Thailand to fight it out. JD Gaming and Made in Thailand were reduced to their final players before Made in Thailand fell first, followed by JD Gaming, allowing Team Vitality to claim the match while GAM The Expendables turned in their best performance of the tournament so far. With 17 Gaming’s early exit, Team Vitality moved into second overall, closing the gap to just two points and setting up what looked like a straight contest between the two sides heading into the final match.

The fifth match overturned those expectations entirely. Every team that had been leading the tournament was eliminated early, with Team Vitality the only front-runner to secure a scoring position, finishing eighth. GAM The Expendables again pushed into the closing stages, this time facing DN SOOPers in the final battle, and DN SOOPers, fighting with a full squad, claimed their first Chicken Dinner of the tournament. Team Vitality’s elimination did not end their day, however, as the additional eight points from that match took their total to fifty points, enough to overtake 17 Gaming and finish as the overall leader after day one.
Team Vitality’s day one performance now puts them in pole position heading into day two, but with four different teams claiming Chicken Dinners across five matches and the leaderboard changing hands after nearly every game, no side can afford to ease off. For a tournament built on unpredictability, day one delivered exactly that, and organizers say the battle for the top spot is far from settled as the competition resumes on Saturday.
