Security Report: Kazakhstan President briefed by NSC Chairman

Astana, 29 August, 2023(GNP): Kazakhstan’s President met the National Security Committee’s Chairman(NSC), Ermek Sagymbayev. During the meeting, the chairman presented a report on their activities in the third quarter of the current year. The report included updates on the progress of assigned tasks and an outline of the plan for the upcoming stages.

The achievements discussed by the NSC’s Chairman, were:

• Successful neutralization of a radical group that had planned terrorist attacks within Kazakhstan.

• NSC launched seven pre-trial investigations into terrorist crimes, which led to the conviction of three extremists.

• Anti-Terrorism Center of the NSC conducted 103 training exercises to enhance counter-terrorism measures.

• Collaboration with the police led to the dismantling of two illegal arms trafficking channels.

• The discovery of twelve hideouts, resulting in the seizure of 59 weapons, three grenades, and 3,339 rounds of ammunition.

• In the fight against narcotics trade, seven laboratories and eight international and regional drug trafficking routes were shut down.

• Confiscation of over 660 kg of narcotics and 17 tons of precursor chemicals.

• Prevention of illegal transportation of currency and goods worth over 3.8 billion tenge(Kazakh currency).

• Legal actions against 120 individuals involved in drug trafficking and smuggling.

• Robust cyber security measures blocked over 36 million cyber attacks, including 866 DDoS(Distributed Denial-of-Service) attacks.

The President commended the NSC’s achievements in countering terrorism, extremism, cybercrime, and various threats. He instructed them to continue collaborating closely with other law enforcement agencies and international allies.

Furthermore, the President highlighted the significance of enhancing border security to safeguard Kazakhstan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The meeting concluded with the President issuing a series of specific directives to guide the activities of NSC.
