PPP called for general elections under Article 224

We, along with our supporters, were anticipating the election date, not the delimitation schedule, Sherry Rehman said.

Islamabad, 19 Aug, 2023 (GNP): The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to review its decision and conduct public polls within 90 days as per Article 224.

According to the PPP, any delimitation without altering the existing constitution of the National Assembly and the seats of the Provincial Assembly should proceed rapidly letting the polls happen within the constitutionally assigned period.

The PPP Parliamentarians’ Vice President, Senator Sherry Rehman acknowledged the ECP’s schedule for conducting the delimitation of constituencies and demanded elections to take place within the expected time.

She stated, “The recent announcement by the Election Commission, indicating that the delimitation of constituencies according to the new census will take four months, is a matter of significant concern and disappointment.”

The senator said that the untimely dissolution of the assemblies was also purposefully intended at giving an excess of time to the ECP for the preparations of conducting general elections.

She commented that the PPP had endorsed elections under the new census in the Council of Common Interests (CCI) meeting because it was agreed that existing seats would remain unchanged, ensuring no unnecessary postponement of elections.

Meanwhile, the PPP leader expressed that the Pakistan People’s Party has agreed to conduct general elections by the new census, despite having logical concerns regarding the digital census.

Moreover, the senator said as the present seats of the national and provincial assemblies remain unchanged, the delimitation should proceed quickly which preferably allows the election to happen within a 90-day timespan.

“We, along with our supporters, were anticipating the election date, not the delimitation schedule,” she added.

Furthermore, the senior politician asserted that any further delay in the general polls would add to the political uncertainty and instability in the country, which can not favor anyone.
