PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi detained in Islamabad

The arrest was carried out just after Qureshi concluded a press conference and confirmed recent meetings with foreign envoys.

Islamabad, 19 Aug, 2023 (GNP): PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi has been arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) from his residence in Islamabad, reported by the sources.

“PTI vice chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi has been illegally arrested once again,” the social media post on the party’s account read.

The arrest was carried out just after Qureshi concluded a press conference and confirmed recent meetings with foreign ambassadors. PTI General Secretary Omar Ayub condemned the arrest, expressing concern about the current caretaker government’s approach.

Qureshi’s detainment is connected to the ongoing investigation by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). The FIA is currently questioning PTI chief Imran Khan about a missing diplomatic cable that has been linked to allegations of a foreign conspiracy against Khan’s prime ministership.

According to a report, Qureshi confirmed his breakfast meeting with the Australian high commissioner and other foreign envoys, where PTI’s concerns about the political and security situation were discussed.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi spoke at a press conference earlier in the day and criticized the action taken against Usman Dar, the Sialkot-based PTI leader, whose home and factories were sealed.

Furthermore, Qureshi dismissed media reports of internal divisions and power struggles. He rejected claims of attempting to succeed Imran Khan as party chief, stating that such notions were fabricated. He emphasized that Imran Khan remained the chairman and that the core committee reaffirmed his position.

While expressing hope for Imran Khan’s release, Qureshi emphasized the need of holding on-time elections as required by the Constitution. He stated that the party would approach the court if elections weren’t held within 90 days.
