Islamabad, 1 July 2024, (GNP): Islamabad has called on New Delhi to promptly release its citizens who have finished their sentences and are still detained in Indian prisons, as the two countries exchanged lists of inmates.
In a statement on Monday, the Foreign Office noted that the exchange of prisoner lists was conducted through diplomatic channels between Islamabad and New Delhi.
These lists are exchanged simultaneously every year on January 1 and July 1, in accordance with the Consular Access Agreement of 2008.
According to the statement, Pakistan provided a list of 254 Indian or presumed Indian civilians and fishermen held in Pakistani jails, while India provided a list of 452 Pakistani or presumed Pakistani civilian prisoners and fishermen in Indian jails.
Additionally, Pakistan handed over a list of 38 missing Pakistani defense personnel, believed to be in Indian custody since the 1965 and 1971 wars.
Islamabad has demanded the immediate release and repatriation of all Pakistani prisoners who have completed their sentences in India.
A request has been made for special consular access to several presumed Pakistani prisoners, including those with physical and mental disabilities, and for swift verification of their national status, the statement added.
The government also urged India to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of all Pakistani or presumed Pakistani prisoners awaiting their release and repatriation.
“The government is committed to addressing humanitarian matters as a priority. It will continue its efforts to ensure the early return of all Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails,” the statement read.
As part of these efforts, the repatriation of 62 Pakistani prisoners in 2023 and four more in 2024 has been secured so far.
