Pakistan Military announces successful operation near Afghanistan border

Pakistani forces eliminate armed fighters in intelligence-based operation near Afghanistan border

Waziristan,20 November, 2023 (GNP): Pakistani security forces have eliminated four armed fighters, including a highly sought individual, near the northwestern border with Afghanistan, as announced by the military on Sunday.

Pakistani forces engaged in a gunfire exchange with fighters in an “intelligence-based operation” in the Khaisoor area of North Waziristan district, as stated in a military press release. The operation resulted in the elimination of four fighters, including a significant individual identified solely by the name “Ibrahim.”

During the operation, troops discovered a stash of weapons, ammunition, and explosives, as indicated by the military statement. Ongoing efforts involve searching the surrounding areas to locate any fighters in hiding.

“The Security Forces of Pakistan are resolute in eradicating the menace of terrorism from the country,” affirmed the military statement.

North Waziristan had been a sanctuary for fighters until the military expelled them following the 2014 attack on an army-run school in Peshawar, claiming over 150 lives, predominantly schoolchildren.

Despite the army’s declaration of successfully clearing the region after years of operation, occasional attacks persist, raising concerns that Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), might have sought refuge in Afghanistan and is regrouping there.

The Pakistani Taliban, although a distinct group, are allied with the Afghan Taliban. The Afghan Taliban assumed control in Afghanistan in 2021 during the final stages of the withdrawal of US and NATO troops after two decades of conflict.
