Pakistan's FIH Hockey World Cup Campaign Ends After Loss to India

Amstelveen (GNP): Pakistan’s campaign at the FIH Hockey World Cup ended in the pool stage after a 5-3 defeat to arch-rivals India at the Wagener Hockey Stadium on Wednesday, with India’s captain Harmanpreet Singh and forward Abhishek each scoring twice to secure their side’s passage to the second round.

The result marked the first World Cup meeting between the two traditional rivals in 16 years, with India having previously beaten Pakistan 4-1 at the 2010 edition held in New Delhi.

India began the match aggressively, dominating the opening quarter and earning four penalty corners inside the first 15 minutes.

Harmanpreet converted the second of those chances in the fifth minute with a powerful grounded flick, before Abhishek doubled the lead in the 11th minute, collecting an aerial pass from his captain and finding the net off a deflection. Pakistan goalkeeper Ali Raza kept his side in contention soon after, saving a further penalty corner attempt from Harmanpreet.

Pakistan began to settle into the game early in the second quarter, but India extended their advantage in the 21st minute when a rebound from a saved shot fell to Harmanpreet, who converted his second goal of the match. Pakistan responded a minute later through Hannan Shahid, who scored on his second attempt after his first effort was saved by Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera.

Abhishek restored India’s three-goal cushion in the 24th minute, dribbling into the circle before his shot deflected in off a Pakistani defender, and Pakistan pulled another goal back shortly after when Sufyan Khan converted a penalty corner to make it 4-2.

India were reduced to ten players late in the first half after Sukhjeet Singh received a green card, but the team held a two-goal lead at the interval. Hardik Singh extended that lead to three in the 34th minute, converting a penalty stroke after Aditya Lalage was obstructed inside the circle.

Hannan Shahid scored his second goal of the match in the 46th minute, capitalising on a lapse in India’s midfield to bring the score to 5-3, but India held on despite missed chances from Sukhjeet Singh, Abhishek and Dilpreet Singh in the second half, and a late Pakistani penalty corner failed to trouble the Indian defence.

The defeat completed a difficult first stage for Pakistan, who had opened their campaign with a 4-1 loss to England before securing a 3-3 draw against Wales. India and England both advanced from Pool D to the second round, with England topping the group after an 8-2 win over Wales on Wednesday, while India carried no points forward into the next stage due to their earlier loss to England.

Elsewhere in the tournament, defending champions Germany were held to a 1-1 draw by France in their Pool B match at the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre. In matches played on Tuesday, Olympic champions Netherlands defeated Argentina 3-1 in Amstelveen, while Ireland beat South Africa 4-1 in a Pool C fixture in Wavre.
