Montreal (GNP): Brandon McNulty World Title has ended a 332-year wait for an American men’s road race world champion after the 28 year old cyclist produced a remarkable solo victory at the 2026 UCI Road World Championships in Montreal. McNulty became the first American man to win the elite road race world title since 1993.
The Brandon McNulty World Title has become a major milestone in the history of American men’s road cycling.
McNulty traversed the rigorous 273.4 kilometre course in six hours and 17 minutes, just 13 seconds ahead of the Australian champion Michael Matthews. Past world champion Mathieu van der Poel of Netherlands finished third and also came about 13 seconds after McNulty.
The Brandon McNulty World Title was secured after an extremely demanding race that tested the riders over a long Montreal course.
McNulty’s triumph was preceded by his important attack about 32 kilometres before reaching the finish line.
This decisive move played a central role in the Brandon McNulty World Title and allowed him to create an important advantage over his rivals.
McNulty’s lead was about 50 before the last lap of the race. However, McNulty was struggling with the last climb, thus the distant between him and other racers was reduced to about 10 seconds prior to the finish line.
Despite the reduced gap, the Brandon McNulty World Title remained within reach as he continued pushing toward the finish.
Brandon McNulty’s world title is very important because it means that the gap between two world championships in road cycling has taken long time since there has not been an American world champion since 1993.
The Brandon McNulty World Title therefore ended a long period without an American winner in the elite men’s road race.
McNulty has now become the third American male winner of the elite men’s road race at the World Championships. The previous occasions of such a victory occurred in 1983 and in 1989 when Greg LeMond won, and in 1993 when Armstrong had been the first American winner of this race.
This accomplishment also adds another important title to McNulty’s collection of titles. To be more specific, the previous title was achieved by McNutly 10 years ago, in 2016, during the junior men’s world road race championship.
The teamwork of Team USA was an important factor for this victory. McNulty was one of the eight riders of the USA team, where Quinn Simmons, Matteo Jorgenson, Sean Quinn, Kevin Vermaerke, Artem Shmidt, Larry Warbasse and Riley Sheehan were also included into the team. Among them, three American boys finished in the top eight.
Quinn Simmons finished in the fourth place, while Matteo Jorgenson became the eighth. The success of the USA riders proved to be very significant for McNulty’s attack.
McNulty acknowledged the contribution of his teammates. The group of Americans worked as a united team during the entire championship.
Brandon McNulty’s World Championship title win came during a significant week for American cycling. Earlier in the championship, Ashlin Barry took the nation’s first medal in men’s competition in the under-23 road race.
McNulty had plenty of experience coming into the championships. As an asset for five-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar while riding for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, he has been fighting well at elite races.
His performance in Montreal was impressive because it followed a strong performance at the same championships, where he finished just 12 seconds outside the medals in the individual time trial.

His achievement gained even more importance as many riders from the top list were expected to challenge for the medals. For example, names such as Mathieu van der Poel, Remco Evenepoel, Wout van Aert, Paul Seixas and Tom Pidcock were among the favorites in the long race held in Montreal.
Nevertheless, Tadej Pogacar who would be riding in the competition could not participate due to the injuries he got in a crash during Vuelta a Espana.
McNulty’s successful breakaway completely changed the outcome of the race; instead of waiting for the final push of the competition, he opted for a long solo ride, leaving behind those who were trying to catch up with him, even though he was getting more tired as the race progressed.
The title that McNulty has won today is proof of the personal achievement and a truly important event for American cycling as with its help the U.S. has finally come back to the top of men’s road race world championship again.
After winning for the rainbow jersey, McNulty will become a proud bearer of the world champion’s jersey that he is going to wear during any road bike race he will take part in in future. The performance of McNulty in Montreal this year will take its rightful place in history of American cycling.
