Green Skills Program Strengthening Environmental Journalism, Amb Maja

Islamabad (GNP): The two-day Green Skills Program for Journalists Bootcamp, organized by IRADA in partnership with SDPI, was successfully held in Islamabad. Environmental journalists from across Pakistan participated in the intensive training program, which focused on climate reporting, storytelling, fact-checking, and emerging environmental challenges.

Members of the Environment Journalists Forum Islamabad also actively took part in the workshop, making it a valuable platform for learning, networking, and sharing experiences.

The concluding ceremony was graced by Maja Derrous Mortensen, Ambassador of Denmark to Pakistan, as the chief guest. Addressing the participants, she highlighted the vital role of journalists in bringing climate issues to the forefront and emphasized the importance of accurate, fact-based reporting in an age of information overload. She encouraged journalists to not only report the facts but also give a voice to communities on the front lines of climate change.

Ambassador of Denmark said to join the concluding ceremony of this two-day Green Skills Program for Journalists Bootcamp. It is a privilege to be here and to celebrate your achievements.

Having reviewed the program, I can see that you have worked hard over the past two days. You have explored important topics such as climate science, climate finance, storytelling, and investigative journalism. I hope these sessions have equipped you with valuable skills that you can apply in your daily work. I also hope you have built strong professional connections that will continue to support your growth and collaboration in the future.

As journalists, you carry a significant responsibility. Today’s news environment is fast-paced, with information spreading rapidly through social media platforms. While speed is important, accuracy remains essential. The challenge of verifying facts and countering misinformation has never been greater, making your role more important than ever.

In the field of climate change, your work goes beyond reporting facts. It is equally important to tell the stories of communities affected by climate-related challenges across Pakistan. By amplifying these voices, journalists can help raise awareness and influence policymakers, financiers, and other stakeholders to take meaningful action.

I would also like to emphasize that this bootcamp is part of a broader collaboration between the Embassy and the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) under the Green Skills Program. Over the past several months, a series of workshops have been organized, culminating in this advanced bootcamp.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to SDPI and our other partners, including IRADA and I-SM, for their dedication in designing and delivering this initiative. Their efforts have been instrumental in making this program a success.

The bootcamp proved to be a step in the right direction toward strengthening environmental journalism in Pakistan. It provided participants with practical skills and fresh perspectives, while also helping them forge new connections and broaden their horizons. As climate challenges continue to grow, such initiatives serve as a beacon of hope, equipping journalists with the tools needed to keep the public informed and policymakers accountable.
