Games of the Future 2026 Officially Launches in Astana with Grand Opening Ceremony

Astana (GNP): The Games of the Future 2026, presented by Samruk-Kazyna, is officially underway after President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev launched the tournament during a landmark opening ceremony in Astana, marking the start of twelve days of competition that will position Kazakhstan at the centre of the global phygital sport movement.

More than 800 athletes from over 50 countries have arrived in the capital to compete across eight disciplines for a combined prize pool exceeding US$4 million, with four major venues across the city set to host the action in front of thousands of spectators and a global television audience expected to reach into the hundreds of millions.

Competition began even before the formal ceremony, with Phygital Basketball presented by Halyk Fund becoming the first discipline to take the stage, offering fans an early glimpse of the blend of digital gaming and physical athleticism that defines the event.

The schedule will expand further from July 31, when Battle Royale featuring PUBG: Battlegrounds, presented by Alatau City Bank, and MOBA PC featuring Dota 2, presented by CenterCredit, join the competition calendar ahead of the remaining disciplines beginning throughout the tournament.

The centrepiece of the opening day took place at Barys Arena, where President Tokayev formally welcomed athletes, delegations and spectators to the Games of the Future Astana 2026 during a ceremony that combined cultural performances with advanced production technology. The event was designed to reflect both Kazakhstan’s national heritage and its ambitions as a host for future-facing sport, setting a tone that organisers hope will carry through the remainder of the tournament.

Ahead of the ceremony, discussions at the Phygital Sport Summit 2026 brought together government ministers, international sports federation leaders, technology executives and innovators at the International Center of Artificial Intelligence, Alem AI, to examine how artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies are shaping the future of competitive sport. The summit underscored the broader ambitions behind the Games of the Future, positioning the tournament not only as an athletic competition but as a platform for dialogue on where sport and technology intersect.

Astana’s hosting of the 2026 edition follows a highly successful debut year in Abu Dhabi, where the 2025 Games generated more than 461 million broadcast views and reached an estimated 137 million unique viewers worldwide, a benchmark that organisers will be looking to build upon as the competition returns for its second edition.

That global reach is expected to continue this year through Phygital+, which will carry every match live, alongside an expanding roster of international broadcast partners including Fox Sports Mexico, StarTimes, BIGG TV, ESR TV, Play TV, Unbeaten and QazSport, ensuring audiences across multiple continents can follow the competition as it unfolds.

With the opening ceremony complete and competition already underway, attention now turns to the days ahead as more disciplines join the schedule and the race for medals and prize money intensifies. Fans can follow ongoing results, fixtures and tournament news through the official Games of the Future website, as well as across the event’s Instagram, X, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube channels.
