Phygital Basketball Delivers Dramatic Opening Day at Games of the Future 2026 in Astana

Astana (GNP): The Games of the Future 2026, powered by Samruk-Kazyna, opened in Astana with Phygital Basketball presented by Halyk Fund setting the tone for the tournament, as eight opening-round contests produced a mix of dominant victories and nail-biting comebacks.

The unique format, which blends a digital gaming stage with a traditional physical basketball stage, immediately showcased why the competition has drawn attention as a genuine test of both gaming skill and athletic performance.

Home favourites GTB KZ had the honour of playing the tournament’s opening match against reigning Phygital Contenders champions Zagrebacki mališani NITUI, though the occasion did not go the hosts’ way. NITUI took control from the outset, building a nine-point lead in the digital stage before extending their advantage further on the court to complete a commanding 34-17 victory and preserve their unbeaten record from the Contenders series. GTB KZ’s Filip Pejovic reflected on the experience afterward, noting that adjusting to competitive gaming again after two decades away from it had been an unexpected challenge alongside the basketball itself.

That opening result set the stage for a far tighter contest between Dangerous and HandsomeMDMX, which produced the day’s standout moment. HandsomeMDMX appeared to be cruising after opening a seven-point lead in the digital stage, but Dangerous flipped the match entirely once play moved to the court, applying sustained defensive pressure and attacking the basket aggressively. A trio of three-pointers in the final ninety seconds sealed a remarkable 37-31 comeback victory, immediately establishing the physical stage as a genuine equalising force in the competition’s format.

A similar theme of reversal played out in Group B, where defending Games of the Future champions Liga Pro Team faced Phygital Contenders runners-up MINSK in one of the day’s most closely watched fixtures. MINSK built an eight-point cushion during the digital stage, but Liga Pro Team responded with a much stronger showing on the court, first levelling the score before edging ahead in a tense finish to win 30-27.

MINSK’s Vaclav Bugaev acknowledged afterward that facing the reigning champions in the second half had been difficult despite his side’s strong start, adding that the team felt well prepared given the length of their journey to the tournament.

Elsewhere in the group, Flow Game Basketball demonstrated the value of building an early lead, opening a fifteen-point gap over Team Apex in the digital stage that proved decisive even as Team Apex fought back strongly on the court. Flow Game Basketball held on for a 34-22 win, with player Francisco Celentano describing the tournament as a new and enjoyable experience for a team still developing its digital-stage skills relative to its physical strength.

Group C produced four contests, each shaped heavily by digital-stage performance. Triada overcame Voždovac Beograd 34-25 after building a nine-point lead before the physical stage finished level, while Paris Phygital narrowly held off a spirited fightback from home side PBC Astana to win 25-22, a match that saw former Olympic 3×3 player Mister Nice help establish an early advantage that ultimately proved enough. Paris Phygital’s Dominique Gentil, marking his return to basketball after two years away, called the digital-stage lead crucial given how strongly PBC Astana had pushed on the court.

Two of the tournament’s more recognisable clubs, Boca Juniors and Valencia Basket, also met on the opening day, with Valencia’s pairing of Marcos Reos and Lu proving decisive in a 32-26 victory built on a strong digital-stage platform. In the day’s final contest, Wilders secured a 30-21 win over Club Pepesqueros, overcoming a narrow physical-stage defeat on the strength of a ten-point advantage established earlier in the digital stage.

Taken together, the opening day’s results underlined the central dynamic of the Phygital Basketball format, in which strong digital-stage performances frequently created cushions that physical-stage comebacks could not always overturn, while several teams proved that momentum built on the court can still be enough to close significant gaps. With the group stage now underway, competition resumes tomorrow at 2pm local time with a fresh schedule of matches as teams continue pursuing places in the knockout rounds.
