First Deputy Minister of Kazakhstan met Director of the UNESCO

Amir Piric provided updates on the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office's transformation into a Regional Multisectoral Office for the Organization.

Astana, 8 September, 2023(GNP): First Deputy Minister of Kazakhstan Kairat Umarov, held a meeting with Amir Piric, the Director of the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office, on Friday.

The meeting took place at the Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Astana. During the meeting, prospects for cooperation with UNESCO in the fields of education, science, and culture were discussed.

Deputy Minister Umarov acknowledged that Kazakhstan’s collaboration with UNESCO has experienced significant advancements in recent years. He also expressed satisfaction with UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay’s decision to establish the UNESCO Regional Office in Astana during her visit to the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi in Turkistan last year.

Deputy Minister also highlighted the significance of joint UNESCO projects in AI and creative industry, aligning with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s State of the Nation Address.

He emphasized UNESCO’s involvement in initiatives to improve teachers’ skills in digital and inclusive settings, along with their research efforts on water security.

Amir Piric, on the other hand, provided information about the ongoing transformation of the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office. This transformation involves the incorporation of new member countries, turning it into a Regional Multi-sectoral Office of the Organization.

He also discussed matters related to the activities of the Central Asian Regional Glaciological Center. Additionally, he addressed the issue concerning the Transboundary Water Horizon (GGRETA) in Tashkent.

In conclusion, it was reported that the Director-General of UNESCO expressed readiness to support the launch of new projects. These projects would be in the fields of education, science, and culture, facilitated through the UNESCO Cluster Office.
