Caretaker governments granted command over ongoing projects

ECP forbids caretaker setups from influencing elections.

Islamabad, 22 Aug, 2023 (GNP): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) stated that the caretaker governments shall not try to hold control over the general election in the country, on Monday.

The ECP further said that the caretakers may pass judgments on the bilateral or multilateral agreements that have already been started on the Commission’s suggestion.

Meanwhile, the commission also supervised authorized personnel of all its branches and the provincial election commissioners to assure “immediate completion” of all the preparations regarding the conducting of public polls and the accessibility of essential material in this respect.

Moreover, the ECP mentioned in a statement on Monday that the caretakers would ensure the conducting of “free and fair” polls in Pakistan.

Furthermore, the statement said, “The caretaker governments shall not attempt to influence the elections or do or cause to be done anything which may, in any manner, influence or adversely affect the free and fair elections.”

Additionally, it also noted that the interim setups allowed the government to make decisions about the current bilateral or multilateral projects already started officially.

“The caretaker governments being non-political entities can take actions or decisions regarding existing bilateral or multilateral agreements or projects already initiated under the Public Private Partnership Authority Act, 2017 (VIII of 2017), the Inter-Governmental Commercial Transactions Act, 2022 (XXX of 2022) and the Privatization Commission Ordinance, 2000 (LII of 2000) under intimation to this Commission.” the statement added.

The ECP Secretary Omar Hamid Khan chaired a meeting to discuss the important measures regarding the forthcoming general elections.

The Commission’s special secretary, DG law, provincial election commissioners, and many senior officials attended the meeting.

The special secretary and the provincial election commissioners informed Khan about the developments made in the preparations so far for the forthcoming elections.

The secretary of the polls supervisory body showed contentment and instructed the heads of all the departments of the election commission and provincial election commissioners to complete arrangements, make contacts with the sectors involved, and ensure the accessibility of needed materials for public polls.

He also asserted that any irresponsible behavior would not be accepted in this regard.
