British HC commemorates 40th anniversary of Chevening scholarships

UK awarded 46 Chevening scholarships to exceptional Pakistani scholars through a rigorous selection process.

Islamabad, 21 Aug, 2023 (GNP): British High Commissioner Jane Marriott CMG OBE celebrated the 40th anniversary of Pakistani recipients of Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships on 21 August, 2023.

This year, the UK awarded 46 Chevening scholarships to exceptional Pakistani scholars through a rigorous selection process.

Notably, this included two female Hindu students and one trans woman, sources said. Additionally, 23 Commonwealth scholars were chosen from Pakistan, with 21 pursuing Master’s programs and two pursuing Ph.D. programs. These bright scholars were selected from various regions of Pakistan.

To honor the legacy of human rights advocate Asma Jahangir, the British High Commissioner presented the Asma Jahangir Award to the top-ranking female Chevening scholar of the year. This year, a tie resulted in three talented females, Anila Yousaf and Zaitoon Kareem from Baluchistan, and Varsha Deepak from Sindh, for receiving the award. Launched in 2018, the Asma Jahangir Scholarship has been awarded to nine female Chevening scholars.

This marks the first year that the UK is offering Chevening scholarships in partnership with institutions in the UK. One partnership is with Swindon Town Football Club, providing a 1-year Master’s degree in Football Coaching or Science at either Solent University or the University Campus of Football Business at Wembley Stadium.

The other partnership is with the University of Essex, offering two scholarships in climate change or heritage and museum studies.

British High Commissioner Jane Marriott CMG-OBE expressed her delight in sending 69 Pakistani students to the UK through the Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships. She emphasized that the scholarships reflect the strong UK-Pakistan relationship and the potential for these students to contribute to Pakistan’s various sectors upon their return.

As per sources, the scholars have selected diverse fields and institutions for their studies, addressing global challenges and fostering innovation.

Furthermore, applications for Chevening Scholarships for the 2024-25 academic year are open from 12 September to 7 November. Information about eligibility and applications can be found at http://www.chevening.org.

Applications for the 2024/25 Commonwealth Scholarships are expected to open in late October or early November 2023, and more information can be found on the CSC website.
