Banks to observe three-day closure on account of Ashura

The upcoming bank holidays will commence on the 28th and 29th of July, followed by the regular Sunday closure.

Karachi, 25 July, 2023 (GNP): The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Tuesday officially declared a three-day closure of all banks across the country in observance of Ashura.

The upcoming bank holidays will commence on the 28th and 29th of July, followed by the regular Sunday closure. A notification released by the SBP stated, “The State Bank of Pakistan will remain closed from 28th to 29th July, 2023 (Friday to Saturday) being public holidays on the occasion of Ashura (9th & 10th Moharram 1445 A.H).”

During these two days, the 28th and 29th of July, the nation will solemnly commemorate Ashura, which marks the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions in the historic Battle of Karbala.

In response to the significance of 9 and 10 Muharram, the federal government has declared public holidays throughout the country.

Furthermore, to maintain a safe environment during the observance of Ashura, the Government of Sindh has taken precautionary measures, including the prohibition of pillion riding on 9 and 10 Muharram. These measures have been implemented under Section 144 of the CrPC to ensure uninterrupted activities on the sacred days.

In line with ensuring security during the holy month of Muharram, the federal government has approved the deployment of armed forces across the nation.

The closure of banks from the 28th to the 29th of July serves to honor the religious observance of Ashura, allowing citizens to pay their respects and observe the day with reverence.
