BAE Systems expands support for Ukraine’s defence efforts

The majority of the equipment that the UK and other governments gave to Ukraine to thwart the Russian invasion was produced by BAE.

London, 1 Sep, 2023 (GNP): British defence company BAE Systems is proud to announce its latest initiative in strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities. BAE Systems has established a local entity in Ukraine and inked agreements with the Ukrainian government to enhance the country’s supply of essential weapons and equipment.

This strategic move marks a significant step in BAE Systems’ commitment to assisting Ukraine in its efforts to bolster its military strength. The company will collaborate directly with Kyiv officials to explore potential partners and develop a plan for the local production of 105mm light guns, a crucial artillery weapon. This collaboration will also enable BAE Systems to better understand Ukraine’s specific capability requirements.

As the United Kingdom’s largest defence contractor, BAE Systems has played a pivotal role in supplying equipment to Ukraine during its ongoing confrontation with Russia. The company has been a key defence supplier, and in May, it became the first country to provide long-range cruise missiles to Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his support for the partnership, stating, “The best weapons that are currently helping our warriors defend Ukraine should be produced in Ukraine. The development of our own weapons production is a top priority.”

However, the Kremlin has expressed concerns over BAE Systems’ presence in Ukraine, warning that any facilities involved in the production of weapons used against Russia would become targets.

BAE Systems’ expansion of its support for Ukraine comes as the country seeks to enhance its military capabilities, including drones, munitions, tanks, and job opportunities for its citizens.

Charles Woodburn, Chief Executive of BAE Systems, emphasized the importance of the agreements and the establishment of a legal entity in Ukraine, stating, “Signing the agreements and establishing a legal entity in Ukraine builds on our existing trust and support and paves the way for us to work together to provide more direct support to the Ukrainian armed forces.”

This announcement follows Ukraine’s recent signing of a statement of intent with Sweden to strengthen cooperation in the production and operation of armoured vehicles.

Western defence companies are increasingly exploring opportunities to contribute to Ukraine’s defence efforts. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, has also urged the European Union for additional arms and ammunition to support its defence capabilities.
