Australian student builds fastest solar electric car

This car surpasses Tesla in terms of performance.

Sydney, 30 January 2023 (GNP): A student-built solar-powered vehicle from Australia that weighs 25% less than a Tesla has broken a preliminary Guinness World Record by traveling 1,000 kilometers in less than 12 hours.

The Sunswift 7 vehicle from the University of New South Wales Sydney recorded the fastest time for the trip at the Australian Automotive Research Centre south of Melbourne, clocking in at 11 hours 53.32 minutes.

That works out to an average speed of around 85 km/h, giving the Sunswift racing team an unofficial record for the ‘Fastest EV across 1,000 kilometers on a single charge.’ After timing data and automobile telemetry data have been examined and approved by a committee of experts, the official honor—and Guinness World Record certificate—will be presented.

Andrea Holden, a UNSW mechanical engineering student, said: “It feels weird to help make something regarded as a world’s best. Two years ago, when we started to build this car, everything was going into lockdown and there were a lot of difficult moments. It was a lot of work and a lot of hours and a lot of stress, but it’s all been worth it.”
