USA to test nuclear spacecraft by 2027

NASA teamed up with USA's defence and research to make the idea of testing nuclear powered spacecraft in 2027 successful.

Washington DC, 27 January 2023 (GNP): As part of a long-term NASA attempt to show more effective ways to send astronauts to Mars in the future, it wants to test a spaceship engine fueled by nuclear fission by 2027 as announced by the head of the space agency on Tuesday.

NASA administrator Bill Nelson announced during a symposium in National Harbor, Maryland, that the space agency will collaborate with the US military’s research and development organization, DARPA, to construct a nuclear thermal propulsion engine and send it into space as soon as possible in 2027.

The US space agency has been researching nuclear thermal propulsion for many years. It involves heating hydrogen propellant in a nuclear reactor to produce thrust that is thought to be much more effective than that of conventional chemical-based rockets.
