Atta Tarar claims PTI plot to revoke Pakistan’s GSP+ status

Islamabad, 13 March, 2024 (GNP): Information Minister Attaullah Tarar asserted today that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has been lobbying the European Union to withdraw Pakistan’s Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) Plus status.

Pakistan was granted GSP Plus status in 2014 and was recently extended until 2027. It provides Pakistani goods duty-free or reduced-duty access to the European market, aiming to promote good governance and sustainable development through trade facilitation.

Information minister alleged that PTI representatives “are getting instructions from jail to harm Pakistan and a conspiracy is being hatched so that the country’s GSP+ status is withdrawn.”

According to Tarar, Khan is reportedly enjoying “luxurious facilities” in jail, including access to amenities such as a personal kitchen, extra accommodations, a designated area for exercise, and extensive visitation rights, contrary to standard prison regulations.

He refuted PTI’s claims of inadequate facilities for Khan and emphasized the Punjab government’s duty to conduct security assessments, with prison authorities responsible for ensuring the safety of all detainees.

Information minister also accused PTI of prioritizing political gains over national interests, alleging that the party’s actions, including correspondence with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), risked economic instability.
