ASEAN Vows to Deepen Ties with Pakistan for Peace

Islamabad (GNP):  ASEAN Committee Islamabad (ACI) marked ASEAN Day 2026 in the capital under the Philippines’ chairmanship theme, “Navigating Our Future, Together.” The Embassy of the Philippines hosted the event, drawing ambassadors and representatives from across the bloc — including Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, and Malaysia — along with media and guests from other friendly countries.

ACI Chairman and Philippine Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Emmanuel R. Fernandez, opened the gathering by thanking attendees for joining the celebration of ASEAN’s founding 59 years ago, and welcomed the event’s chief guest.

In his remarks, Fernandez laid out why he believes ASEAN’s example carries weight well beyond Southeast Asia. He pointed first to the bloc’s record of avoiding conflict among its own members for nearly six decades, despite wide differences in history, religion, and political systems — crediting what’s often called the “ASEAN Way” of resolving disagreements through dialogue rather than confrontation or outside interference.

He also pointed to the bloc’s economic weight — a combined population of roughly 700 million and an economy nearing $4 trillion — as proof of the opportunities regional cooperation can unlock.

And he singled out ASEAN’s demographic profile as its biggest long-term asset, describing a population that is increasingly educated, digitally fluent, and entrepreneurial. In his words, the region represents not just a market of 700 million consumers but a pool of 700 million potential contributors.

Fernandez tied these points back to this year’s theme, arguing that today’s global challenges are too complex for any single country to solve alone and require coordinated action instead.

He went on to note that ASEAN, founded in 1967, has kept the peace among its members despite territorial disputes and divergent backgrounds, calling that record — alongside the prosperity it has enabled — the bloc’s central achievement.

He reiterated the scale of ASEAN’s economy and population as a source of trade and investment potential, highlighted the strength of its young workforce, and said the Philippines wants to deepen economic ties with Pakistan specifically. He closed by describing the event as a celebration of friendship and shared prosperity, and an opportunity to build stronger people-to-people ties between Pakistan and ASEAN nations.

Federal Minister for Cultural Heritage Aurangzeb Khichi, addressing the same ACI-organized ceremony, reaffirmed Pakistan’s interest in deepening its relationship with ASEAN and said the government hopes to secure status as a full ASEAN dialogue partner — a move he framed as key to expanding trade, investment, and economic cooperation. He extended congratulations to ASEAN member governments and peoples on behalf of Pakistan.

Khichi described ASEAN’s transformation over six decades into an integrated, peaceful community that has driven regional economic growth. He noted that the bloc’s roughly $4 trillion economy is expected to become the world’s fourth-largest by 2030, and said Pakistan supports the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which centers on a population of about 700 million people, aligning with ASEAN’s broader push for regional connectivity and sustainable development.

He said Pakistan has been an active participant in ASEAN-linked multilateral forums and has worked to follow through on commitments made through that engagement. On trade, he cited a bilateral volume of roughly $11 billion in 2025, while acknowledging significant room for growth through greater investment, joint ventures, and private-sector partnerships.

Khichi argued that securing dialogue partner status would open new avenues for economic cooperation and strengthen institutional ties between the two sides, and said Pakistan remains committed to supporting regional peace, stability, and development going forward.

The committee, for its part, reaffirmed ASEAN’s own commitment to building a peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous region, and said it looks forward to continued collaboration with Pakistan and other partners toward the goals set out in ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
