Argentina's Ugly Exit Overshadows Spain's World Cup Glory

New York (GNP): Spain’s World Cup triumph was overshadowed by chaotic scenes at the final whistle on Sunday, after a mass brawl involving players from both sides broke out following the team’s 1-0 extra-time win over 10-man Argentina, drawing sharp criticism of Argentina’s conduct in defeat.

Argentina substitute Leandro Paredes, on the pitch for only a few minutes, was shown a red card after full time for his involvement in the confrontation, which erupted as Spain’s substitutes rushed onto the field to celebrate Ferran Torres’s 106th-minute winning goal. The result gave Spain their second World Cup title and completed a tournament in which they conceded only a single goal.

Tensions had first surfaced earlier in the second half, when Paredes was booked for an off-the-ball incident involving Spain captain Rodri, prompting players from both benches to confront the referee before order was restored. Argentina had already been reduced to ten men after Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card for a challenge on Pau Cubarsi, a dismissal that proved decisive in the contest.

The situation escalated further at the final whistle. Argentina defender Nahuel Molina was reported to have struck an opponent as Spanish players ran past him in celebration, triggering a wider physical confrontation involving Paredes and several Spain players before Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni intervened to separate the two sides.

Former Australian international Craig Foster described Argentina’s post-match conduct as “shocking and disgraceful,” a remark that has drawn wider attention to how the defending champions responded to their loss.

The scenes stood in contrast to an earlier gesture of sportsmanship, when players from both teams had formed an informal guard of honour for Argentina’s squad as they collected their runners-up medals, only for the post-whistle brawl to follow shortly after.

The defeat marked a disappointing end to the tournament for Lionel Messi, who may have played his final World Cup match, as Argentina’s campaign closed not only with the loss of the trophy but also with renewed scrutiny of the team’s conduct in its immediate aftermath. Spain, meanwhile, became the first nation to hold both the men’s and women’s World Cup titles simultaneously.
