Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar sworn in as Pakistan’s interim Prime Minister

The oath-taking ceremony took place under the administration of Pakistan's President Arif Alvi.

Islamabad, 14 Aug, 2023 (GNP): Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar, a former Senator and prominent leader of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), officially assumed the role of Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister on Monday, as reported by sources.

The oath-taking ceremony took place under the administration of Pakistan’s President Arif Alvi, witnessed by outgoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, former cabinet ministers. As per sources, the Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, and other senior officials were also present.

Before his formal induction, Kakar’s principled commitment to impartiality led to his resignation from the Senate, an act recognized by a notification from the Senate Secretariat. President Alvi’s approval of Kakar’s appointment was highlighted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), citing Article 224 A of Pakistan’s constitution.

Hailing from Balochistan, Kakar has a notable political trajectory, serving as a Balochistan lawmaker and spokesperson for the provincial government before his Senate tenure. According to the sources, Kakar holds a master’s degree in political science and Sociology from the University of Balochistan and embarked on his career by teaching in his hometown.

As the 8th interim head of government, Kakar assumes leadership amidst close ties with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) during its previous governance, and his counsel was sought by former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Balochistan-related matters. Notably, his alignment with different political factions stirred both praise and critique.

Born in 1971 in Muslim Bagh, Kakar’s journey from Balochistan roots to the national political landscape underscores his commitment to public service and governance. He co-founded the Balochistan Awami Party and served as its central spokesperson in 2018.

Kakar’s ascent to the caretaker premiership symbolizes a pivotal juncture in Pakistan’s leadership, underscoring his diverse experiences, dedication to neutrality, and his vision for guiding the nation through its transitional phase.
