Stockholm (GNP): Canadian poet, essayist and translator Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, with the Swedish Academy praising her “bold and inventive oeuvre” and her innovative dialogue with classical traditions.
At 76, Carson becomes one of the most prominent contemporary literary figures to receive the award. The Academy said her work brings together poetry, prose, translation, scholarship and classical literature, and singled out her fascination with language and etymology. It described her output as a meeting point between the precision of a philologist and the creative search of a poet.
That blend runs through her career. Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson is widely recognised for genre-defying writing and for her translations of ancient Greek literature. Her work often combines classical mythology and philosophy with contemporary experience and experimental form.
Among her best-known titles are “Autobiography of Red”, “The Beauty of the Husband”, “Nox” and “Norma Jeane Baker of Troy”. Her writing has earned a number of international honours, including the Griffin Poetry Prize and the T. S. Eliot Prize.
News of the Nobel reached her in Iceland, and she expressed surprise at being chosen for the world’s most prestigious literary award. She has held Icelandic citizenship since 2022 and divides her time between Iceland and New York.
The win also carries national significance. Carson is the first Canadian to take the literature prize since Alice Munro received it in 2013.

The prize comes with 12 million Swedish kronor, along with the Nobel medal and diploma. The formal ceremony will take place in Stockholm in December.
Her award completes the fourth Nobel announcement of the season. Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel won the medicine prize for discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. Francis Halzen took the physics prize for contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin. Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai won the chemistry prize for discoveries concerning non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.
Two announcements remain. The Nobel Peace Prize is scheduled for October 9, and the Prize in Economic Sciences will follow on October 12.
The Swedish Academy said Carson’s work has created “new forms for contemporary literature.”
