Andrew Flintoff Steps Down as England Lions Head Coach

Andrew Flintoff has stepped down as head coach of England Lions with immediate effect, ahead of his upcoming winter role in Australia’s Big Bash League. The former all-rounder, 48, had led England’s second-string side since September 2024 and had previously been cleared to leave this winter’s Lions tour of South Africa early to take up his new position with Sydney Thunder.

The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed his departure on Friday evening, with Flintoff said to have concluded that his BBL commitment, alongside television work and family responsibilities, meant he could no longer fully commit to the Lions role.

In a statement issued through the ECB, Flintoff said he had made the decision to step away from the Lions, adding that he had enjoyed working with the country’s best young cricketers and had taken pride in seeing them develop.

His exit comes shortly after England men’s team director Rob Key defended Flintoff’s work with the Lions amid recent criticism, describing him as outstanding in the role and stating that the team had been fortunate to have him.

Flintoff had been involved in negotiating player availability with the counties for a Lions-style side set to serve as warm-up opposition for Pakistan’s Test squad in a four-day match at Beckenham starting Wednesday.

Mike Yardy, head coach of England Under-19s, will now take charge of that team, officially known as the Professional County Club Select XI, drawing on young players not currently involved in the Hundred or required by their counties in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

Separately, England’s senior squad preparing to face Pakistan in the first Test at Headingley, starting August 19, has been hit by an injury concern after opener Emilio Gay retired hurt while batting for Durham with an apparent shoulder problem. Middle-order batter Ollie Pope is currently the squad’s reserve batter, meaning a specialist opener may need to be called up should Gay’s injury prove significant.
