Ambassador Blome assures US support for fair polls in Pakistan

The US has provided more than $215 million in Pakistan's flood relief program.

Islamabad, 25 Aug, 2023 (GNP): The United States Ambassador Donald Blome met Chief Elec­tion Commissioner Sikan­der Sultan Raja on Thursday to maintain the US assistance for a fair and free general election “conducted in accordance with Pakist­an’s laws and Constitution.”

As per the official press release issued by the US Embassy, the ambassador of the US reiterated that Pakistan’s leaders are the choice of the common people, emphasizing commitment to strengthening US-Pakistan relations irrespective of the chosen leadership.

However, the concerns over the holding-up of public polls have not been expressed directly but hinted that the global figures spurred general elections within 90 days according to the Constitution of Pakistan.

Moreover, as per the constitutional guidelines, Pakistan was scheduled to hold elections in November after the dissolution of the National Asse­m­bly and set up an interim government in the earlier days of August but following a call by the Council of Common Interests to ratify the results of the digital census and its notification two days before the NA was dissolved, the ECP had given out a schedule to delimit the constituencies, surpassing the constitutional time limit to conduct the public polls.

Additionally, the US has provided more than $215 million in flood relief, disaster resilience, and food security help to Pakistan since the beginning of the catastrophic floods of 2022.

The US Embassy in Islamabad released the figures on Thursday, that exhibited more than $80m in US humanitarian aid through USAID to provide urgently required supplies for those seriously affected, such as support for food, nutrition, health, security, safe drinking water, improved sanitation and hygiene, and shelter.
