China Opens World's First Dedicated School for Robots in Hangzhou

Hangzhou (GNP): China has opened its first dedicated school for robots in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, where machines are being trained alongside curricula tailored for real-world employment, signalling Beijing’s ambitious drive to establish leadership in the global robotics industry.

The Hangzhou Robot School welcomed its inaugural class of 30 robots drawn from the manufacturing, services, security and entertainment sectors, marking a shift from laboratory demonstrations to practical workforce integration.

The machines are undergoing a comprehensive programme combining physical assessments, specialised coursework and hands-on practical training, with final skills evaluations determining their readiness for workplace roles.

The school has organised its training into four distinct study areas covering technical skills, nursing, arts and sports, with each robot’s coursework tailored to its individual physical capabilities.

Engineers overseeing the programme said the approach ensures training aligns with what each machine can physically perform, and footage released from the school has shown humanoid robots participating in activities ranging from sports to music, demonstrating the versatility of the programme.

The launch forms part of China’s broader strategic push to establish leadership in the global robotics industry, building on the country’s existing dominance in manufacturing and supply chains as it seeks to create a trained robotic workforce capable of performing complex tasks across multiple sectors.

Industry analysts view the school as a potential template for future robotics education worldwide, with standardised training and certification programmes expected to become increasingly important as robots grow more sophisticated.

The initiative reflects a growing recognition that robots are being positioned not merely as tools but as potential colleagues requiring structured education and integration into human work environments. Through certification, the school aims to ensure robots can operate safely and effectively alongside human workers in factories, hospitals, offices and public spaces.

Graduates of the programme will receive certificates confirming their readiness for specific workplace roles, a step organisers say could pave the way for broader adoption of robotic workers across China’s economy.
