Climate Change Action Urged As UNEP Highlights Global Crisis

NAIROBI (GNP): Climate Change remains one of the world’s greatest environmental challenges as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) warned that greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise despite more than a decade since the adoption of the Paris Agreement.

UNEP stressed that while emissions are accelerating global warming, there is still time for governments, businesses, and individuals to take meaningful action. The organization called on the international community to strengthen efforts to reduce carbon emissions, transition to clean energy, and protect ecosystems to meet global climate goals.

According to UNEP, tackling climate change requires both policy reforms and individual responsibility. The agency encouraged people to adopt sustainable lifestyles by reducing energy consumption, minimizing waste, choosing low-carbon transportation, and supporting environmental conservation initiatives. It emphasized that collective action remains essential to limiting the impacts of global warming.

The organization also highlighted that climate change is contributing to more frequent and severe heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires, and rising sea levels. These impacts continue to threaten food security, public health, biodiversity, and economic stability across both developed and developing countries.

UNEP reaffirmed that the Paris Agreement remains the world’s primary framework for limiting global temperature increases and avoiding the worst effects of climate change. However, it warned that current emission levels remain inconsistent with international targets, making stronger national commitments increasingly urgent.

The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), aims to limit global warming to well below 2°C while pursuing efforts to keep it below 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Nearly every country has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through nationally determined contributions (NDCs).

Climate experts continue to warn that delaying climate action will increase environmental, humanitarian, and economic costs worldwide. International organizations, including UNEP, regularly urge governments to accelerate investments in renewable energy, climate adaptation, sustainable infrastructure, and nature-based solutions to safeguard future generations.
