ISLAMABAD (GNP): President Asif Ali Zardari conveyed his congratulations to Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko and the Belarusian people on the occasion of their national Independence Day.
In his message, the president described the anniversary — which marks Minsk’s liberation from Nazi occupation — as a tribute to the perseverance and resolve Belarusians showed in pursuing independence. He characterized the occasion as a milestone in the country’s broader path toward stability, unity, and lasting peace.
Zardari emphasized that Islamabad places great importance on its warm and constructive relationship with Belarus, describing the partnership as one built on mutual confidence and common goals for development. He affirmed Pakistan’s intent to deepen collaboration between the two nations across multiple areas going forward.
Belarusian Envoy Reflects on Bilateral Ties
Separately, in remarks the Belarusian ambassador in Islamabad noted that his country has built a reputation internationally as a stable partner committed to sustainable growth, regional collaboration, and peaceful relations with other states.
The ambassador pointed out that diplomatic relations between the two countries date back to February 1994, meaning this year represents 32 years of formal ties. He observed that what began as a modest relationship has grown into a broad-based partnership spanning many sectors, with continued efforts underway to expand it further.
He identified the opening of Belarus’s embassy in Islamabad in 2014, followed by Pakistan’s embassy in Minsk a year later, as a turning point that gave real momentum to cooperation between the two governments.
According to the ambassador, the two sides maintain consistent diplomatic engagement supported by a well-developed institutional structure — including a joint trade and economic commission, intergovernmental panels on science, technology, and military-technical matters, along with dedicated working groups in industry, agriculture, education, and pharmaceuticals. He added that over 110 agreements and memoranda have been signed between the countries, forming a substantial legal basis for their cooperation, while exchanges between lawmakers, business communities, and regional bodies continue to grow.
On the multilateral front, the ambassador said Belarus and Pakistan often align on major global questions, both endorsing principles such as equal sovereignty among states, non-interference in domestic matters, and resolving disputes through peaceful means. He noted the two countries collaborate within both the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, which Belarus formally joined in July 2024.

Within the UN, he said, the two nations find common ground on issues like defending traditional family structures, addressing human rights without political bias, and safeguarding cultural diversity. In the SCO framework, he added, both support efforts to bolster regional security, counter terrorism and extremism, and improve transport links across the Eurasian region.
Turning to practical cooperation, the ambassador highlighted the strong reputation Belarusian tractors have earned among Pakistani farmers for their durability and performance. He also noted educational and labor ties are expanding, with roughly 150 Pakistani students currently studying in Belarus and over 600 Pakistani workers employed across various sectors of the Belarusian economy.
